WHAT IS BITCOIN?

Bitcoin is a digital money and payment network that works without a bank, company or government controlling it.

Computers around the world follow the same public rules and maintain a shared record of transactions called the Bitcoin blockchain. From a user's point of view, a wallet lets you send and receive bitcoin. Behind the scenes, the network verifies transactions and miners package them into blocks.

Bitcoin's issuance is predictable and decreases over time, ultimately approaching a maximum of 21 million BTC.

MODULE 02

WHO CREATED BITCOIN?

Bitcoin was introduced under the name Satoshi Nakamoto.

Satoshi published the Bitcoin white paper in 2008 and released the first Bitcoin software soon afterward. Bitcoin began operating in January 2009. Satoshi later stepped away from the project without revealing a verified real-world identity.

Today, Bitcoin does not depend on Satoshi. Its software is open-source, and the network's rules are enforced by participants who choose which software they run.

MODULE 03

WHAT IS A SATOSHI?

A satoshi — usually shortened to sat — is the smallest commonly used unit of bitcoin.

1 BTC=100,000,000 SATS

You do not need an entire bitcoin to use Bitcoin. This tiny unit becomes especially important when we get to Ordinal Theory, because Ordinal Theory gives individual sats identities that can be tracked.

MODULE 04

WHAT ARE ORDINALS?

Ordinal Theory is a protocol for assigning serial numbers to individual satoshis and tracking them as they move through Bitcoin transactions.

Sats are numbered in the order they were mined. Ordinal Theory does not create another blockchain or a separate cryptocurrency — it is a way of interpreting and tracking sats that already exist on Bitcoin.

MODULE 05

WHAT IS AN INSCRIPTION?

An inscription associates digital content with an individual sat, creating a Bitcoin-native digital artifact.

That content can include images, text, HTML, SVG, audio and other supported file types. Inscription content is stored on-chain, and the inscribed sat can move through normal Bitcoin transactions.

People often compare inscriptions to NFTs, but Ordinals users commonly call them digital artifacts because the content and ownership model are Bitcoin-native.

MODULE 06

WHAT IS AN INSCRIPTION ID?

Every inscription has a unique identifier that points back to the Bitcoin transaction where it was revealed.

The part before the i is the transaction ID. The number after the i identifies the inscription's index within that reveal transaction.

MODULE 07

WHAT EXACTLY IS AN ORDIMUTANT?

An OrdiMutant has more than one layer. Understanding those layers makes the rest of the site much easier to read.

WHAT ARE RARE & EXOTIC SATS?

Once individual sats can be identified, collectors can notice that some occupy unusually interesting places in Bitcoin's history.

Some sats are notable because of Bitcoin's issuance schedule. Others are collected because they were mined very early, came from historically significant blocks, passed through famous transactions or have unusual numerical patterns.

IMPORTANT

A collectible satribute does not make that sat worth more bitcoin at the protocol level. Any collectible premium comes from scarcity, history, numerical properties and collector demand.

The Ordinal Theory Handbook uses the word exotic for sats prized for reasons beyond the formal rarity ladder and explicitly notes that what counts as exotic can be subjective.

ORDINAL RARITY — 60 SECONDS

This is useful background, but it is only one way collectors classify interesting sats.

HISTORICAL & EXOTIC SATRIBUTES

This is where OrdiMutants gets especially interesting. Many specimens are inscribed on sats with a story that exists independently of the artwork.

These categories are community-recognized classifications, not all protocol-level rarity classes. Definitions can come from block history, transaction provenance or numerical patterns.

BLOCK 9

EARLY CIRCULATING SATS

Sats originating from Bitcoin block 9. Block 9 is especially famous because the bitcoin used in Satoshi Nakamoto's first transaction to Hal Finney came from its coinbase reward.

NAKAMOTO

SATOSHI-MINED BLOCKS

Sats from blocks attributed by collectors and researchers to Satoshi Nakamoto. Their appeal comes from a direct connection to Bitcoin's earliest mining history.

VINTAGE

FIRST 1,000 BLOCKS

Sats mined in Bitcoin blocks 0 through 999. These represent Bitcoin's earliest block era and are among the oldest sats collectors track.

FIRST TRANSACTION

SATOSHI → HAL FINNEY

Sats traced to the first known person-to-person Bitcoin transaction, when Satoshi sent bitcoin to Hal Finney in January 2009.

PIZZA

BITCOIN PIZZA DAY

Sats traced to the famous 10,000 BTC purchase of two pizzas on May 22, 2010 — one of Bitcoin's best-known early commercial transactions.

PARASITE

PARASITE POOL // FIRST BLOCK

Sats mined in the first Bitcoin block found by Parasite Pool. Their significance comes from that mining-pool milestone.

SILK ROAD

U.S. MARSHALS AUCTION PROVENANCE

Sats traced to bitcoin seized from Silk Road and included in the first U.S. Marshals auction of Silk Road bitcoin in 2014.

HITMAN

SILK ROAD-ERA TRANSACTION

Sats tied by rare-sat researchers to a controversial transaction associated with Ross Ulbricht's alleged attempt to hire a hitman.

Sats traced to what researchers describe as a possible first Bitcoin transaction involving an image, dated February 24, 2010.

BLOCK 666

NUMERICAL BLOCK HISTORY

Sats originating from Bitcoin block 666. Their collectibility comes from the culturally recognizable block number rather than formal rarity.

PALINDROME

NUMBER PATTERN

A sat whose ordinal number reads the same forwards and backwards, such as 123454321. Its interest comes from the number itself.

BLACK SATS

THE END OF AN EVENT

Black sats mark the opposite boundary of certain rarity events. A Black Uncommon, for example, is the last sat of a block; Black Rare and Black Epic sats similarly sit immediately before larger periodic events.

WHY ORDIMUTANTS CARES ABOUT SAT HISTORY

An OrdiMutant is not only image + traits. The sat beneath the artwork can carry a completely separate layer of Bitcoin history.

SEED PHRASE & WALLET SAFETY

NEVER SHARE YOUR SEED / RECOVERY PHRASE.

Anyone who gets it can control your wallet. OrdiMutants staff will never ask for it. A marketplace, mint or legitimate support representative should never need it.

  • Verify links before connecting your wallet.
  • Read what you are signing before approving a transaction.
  • Use a small test transaction while learning.
  • Double-check the receiving address.
  • Do not store your recovery phrase in screenshots, Discord messages or casual cloud notes.
  • Before spending a UTXO that may contain a rare sat or inscription, make sure your wallet is handling it correctly.

Bitcoin

The network and monetary system.

BTC

The common abbreviation for the bitcoin currency unit.

Sat / Satoshi

The smallest commonly used unit of bitcoin. 100,000,000 sats = 1 BTC.

Block

A batch of Bitcoin transactions confirmed into the blockchain.

Miner

A participant using computational work to produce Bitcoin blocks and help secure the network.

Wallet

Software or hardware used to manage keys and interact with Bitcoin.

Address

A destination used to receive Bitcoin assets.

UTXO

An unspent transaction output. Bitcoin wallet balances are composed of UTXOs rather than a single account balance stored on-chain.

Ordinal Theory

A protocol for numbering and tracking individual satoshis.

Inscription

Digital content associated with a sat, creating a Bitcoin-native digital artifact.

Inscription ID

The unique identifier for an inscription.

Sattribute

A collectible characteristic or classification associated with a sat.

Rare sat

A broad community term for sats collectors consider unusual or desirable.

Exotic sat

A sat prized for historical, numerical or other characteristics beyond the basic rarity ladder.

Fee rate

The transaction fee rate offered when sending a Bitcoin transaction, generally expressed in sats per virtual byte.

Seed / recovery phrase

Secret recovery information capable of restoring control of a wallet. Never share it.
